Sonu Kumar was adopted by Alphabets in 2012, when the Organization was still in its nascent stage. Sonu’s story is one of extreme resilience and will-power. It is also a testament to the transforming power of education.
Sonu’s father was a respectable driver but fell victim to alcoholism, an addiction he acquired from his employer. Eventually, his desperation for alcohol, became so severe that Sonu’s father stopped caring for and catering to his family’s needs. Though still employed, his contribution to Sonu’s life was minimal. The situation was so dire that the family had no money to educate Sonu.
At Alphabets, it has always been our policy not to adopt the “only child” from a family where the breadwinner had the means to finance education. However, after due diligence we felt that Sonu had an extreme desire to learn and thus, we broke our golden rule to adopt him to the Alphabets family.
In the following years, Sonu had a tumultuous time. His father passed away and his maternal side of the family put a lot of undue pressure on Sonu and his mother. Once motivated by us to start working, Sonu’s mother had to stay home and he was under constant pressure from the family to drop studying and take up menial jobs.
However, we persevered through these times with Sonu and his mother, counselled them and even motivated them to keep their vision clear. Sonu’s persistence motivated us and instilled a firm belief in our members to support his struggles.
Today, almost 12 years later, Sonu has completed his 12th standard and dreams of becoming a doctor. Alphabets is still financing his tuitions at Akash Institute and mentoring and motivating him to achieve his dreams. Sonu has been making considerable improvement in his NEET results and we hope and expect that Sonu will earn admission into a good medical school soon!
